The Gospel Explained at The Woodlands First Baptist Church

If someone asked you right now: “Are you 100% certain about your eternal destiny?”, could you say yes without hesitation?

Not 50% sure. Not 75% sure. But absolutely, completely certain.

For many people searching for churches near me or exploring Woodlands churches, this question of eternal security feels overwhelming. Some try to earn their way to heaven through good works. Others hope their church membership or religious activity will be enough. But deep down, there’s uncertainty.

The Bible offers something better than uncertainty: confidence grounded in God’s grace.

The Problem We All Face

The book of Ephesians paints a stark picture of humanity apart from Christ. Before salvation, we are “dead in our transgressions and sins” and “deserving of wrath” (Ephesians 2:1-3). This isn’t just religious language, it’s the reality of our spiritual condition.

Romans 3:23 makes it clear: “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” We’re not just imperfect people who need a little help. We’re spiritually dead, unable to save ourselves, floating toward judgment.

That’s a hard truth. But it’s also why the gospel is such good news.

Four Words That Change Everything

In Ephesians 2:8-10, the apostle Paul gives us what many have called “the gospel in a nutshell.” Four key words unlock the path to eternal life: saved, grace, faith, and works.

Ephesians 2:8-10 reveals the gospel in a nutshell: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”

1. Saved: Rescued from What We Deserve

The word “saved” implies we’re in trouble. And according to Scripture, we are.

Jesus didn’t come to condemn us, we’re already condemned by our sin. He came to rescue us. John 3:16-18 declares, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

God’s desire, according to 2 Peter 3:9, is “that all should have eternal life.” His love is broader than we can comprehend, and His mercy is waiting for anyone who will receive it.

2. Grace: The Foundation of Salvation

Ephesians 2:4-7 describes grace beautifully: “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.”

Grace is God’s unearned favor. It’s His love, mercy, and kindness expressed toward people who deserve wrath. Author Frederick Buechner wrote, “Grace is something you can never get but only be given. There is no way to earn it or deserve it.”

Grace means that when we were spiritually dead and unable to move toward God, He moved toward us first. He enlivened our hearts to respond. As Romans 5:8 says, “God demonstrated his love for us in this: While we were yet sinners Christ died for us.”

3. Faith: Trusting God to Do What We Cannot

Ephesians 2:8 makes the order clear: “We are saved by grace through faith.”

Some struggle with this because they think faith must be something we produce or perform. But saving faith isn’t about the strength of our belief — it’s about trusting God to do what we cannot do for ourselves.

Think of it like this: When you’re in excruciating pain and finally reach a doctor, you don’t get credit for having “outstanding faith” when you let them help you. You’re simply desperate enough to accept the help you need.

That’s saving faith. It’s recognizing we cannot save ourselves and reaching out to trust God to do what only He can do.

To make absolutely sure we don’t confuse faith with works, Paul emphasizes it repeatedly: “Saved by grace through faith”, “Not of ourselves”, “It is a gift from God”, “Not of works so that no one can boast”.

The actor Steve McQueen discovered this truth at the end of his life. Battling cancer and struggling to believe God could forgive him after the life he’d lived, Billy Graham shared Scripture with him. McQueen was buried with his Bible open to Titus 1:2, his finger pointing to these words: “A faith resting on the hope of eternal life, which God who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time.”

4. Works: The Result, Not the Requirement

Here’s where many Woodlands church seekers get confused: If salvation isn’t by works, do works matter at all?

Ephesians 2:10 answers: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

The word “handiwork” comes from the Greek word poiema — where we get “poem.” When you accept God’s grace through faith, you become God’s poem, His work of art. He makes you a new creation for the purpose of blessing the world and filling your life with meaning.

Works don’t save you. But salvation transforms you into someone who does good works.

Author Shel Silverstein wrote a children’s book called “The Missing Piece” about a circle searching for what would complete it. Many of us feel that same yearning — the sense that something is missing even when life looks successful on the outside.

You were created to love and serve God. Until you find your place in His kingdom, you’ll never be complete. Jesus came to fill that missing piece.

Finding Certainty in Christ

The Bible was written, according to 1 John 5:13, “so that you may know you have eternal life.” Not guess. Not hope. KNOW.
