Looking for a Church in The Woodlands, TX? You Are Gifted and Called.
If you’ve ever felt like “ministry” is something only pastors or “church professionals” do, Ephesians 4:7-16 offers a life-changing correction. In this passage, the Apostle Paul paints a picture of King Jesus, not just as Savior, but as the victorious conqueror who gives gifts to His people. And those gifts aren’t trophies for personal achievement; they’re tools for building up the church and helping people grow into maturity in Christ.
For those of us in The Woodlands, TX, busy families, working professionals, students, retirees, this is both encouraging and challenging: you are gifted, and you are called.
Jesus vs. Caesar: A Different Kind of Victory
The Christmas story in Luke 2 opens with a political headline: “In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree…” The ruler behind that name (Octavian, later titled “Augustus”), was arguably the most powerful human being on earth in his era. His triumphs were celebrated with grand parades, public humiliation of enemies, and gifts distributed as spoils of conquest.
Paul knew that world. He wrote to believers in Ephesus, an influential city in the Roman Empire, where the shadow of Caesar’s power still loomed. But Paul’s message is clear: the real Victor is Jesus Christ. Not Rome. Not a political system. Not human strength. Jesus is the eternal King of the universe.
And unlike Caesar’s self-serving dominance, Jesus’ victory has a different character. He doesn’t crush to enrich Himself … He conquers evil to bless His people.
Grace Given to Each One
Ephesians 4:7 begins with a personal word: “But to each one of us grace has been given…” That’s not “to a select few.” Not “to the spiritually elite.” To each one.
Paul then connects Jesus’ victory to Psalm 68, a royal hymn celebrating God’s power and deliverance: “When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.” (Eph. 4:8)
In other words: King Jesus has won the victory, and the church receives His gifts. We are not spectators in His kingdom, we are recipients of grace, equipped for purpose.
Jesus Ascended by Descending
Paul highlights something easy to miss: Jesus’ triumph came through humility.
“What does ‘he ascended’ mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? … in order to fill the whole universe with his presence.” (Eph. 4:9–10)
Caesar climbed by conquest. Jesus rose by descending, by becoming a servant, by humbling Himself, by coming to us. And Psalm 68 doesn’t just celebrate power; it reveals God’s heart: a Father to the fatherless, a defender of widows… One who sets the lonely in families.
That’s a beautiful picture of what the church is meant to be, especially here in The Woodlands, where so many people are searching for connection, community, and hope.
Gifts Aren’t for Show … They’re for Service
One of the most freeing truths in the Christian life is this: you are gifted and talented because you are created in the image of God, and if you belong to Christ, His Spirit empowers you for the common good.
Paul echoes this theme across his letters: there are different gifts, different kinds of service, different workings, but the same God is at work in everyone. The point is consistent:
- Everyone is gifted.
- No one is gifted for selfish reasons.
- Gifts are given to build up others.
This matters because many people carry old labels: “not smart enough,” “not spiritual enough,” “too broken,” “too behind.” But you are not defined by what you’ve been through, what was done to you, your income level, your education, your family background, or your story. God can use your life in powerful ways when you submit it to Him.
Want a simple way to start identifying how God has gifted you? Ask:
- What do I do that most builds up other Christians?
- What do others repeatedly affirm that God uses me to do?
- What do I feel compelled to do for Jesus even when it’s hard?
Those questions can point you toward your spiritual “lane” where your joy and others’ growth intersect.
Every Believer Is a Priest (Yes, You!!!)

Teaching from Ephesians 4:7–16, we’re reminded that Jesus (not any earthly ruler) is the true victorious King, and He gives gifts to every believer to build up the body of Christ.
The New Testament repeats this again and again: because Jesus is our mediator, we have direct access to God, and we are called into priestly service.
A priest is a “bridge builder” someone who holds onto God and reaches toward others. That calling isn’t reserved for a select few; it belongs to the whole church.
Practically, this means it shouldn’t be “the staff” checking on people, visiting the hurting, caring for the grieving, discipling new believers, or welcoming newcomers. A church becomes a real church when the people of God love like the family of God.
And in a community like The Woodlands, where neighbors can feel isolated even in beautiful neighborhoods, this kind of intentional care is a gospel witness.
Maturity Comes When Each Part Does Its Work
Paul’s goal is not just a busy church; it’s a mature church.
When every believer uses their gifts:
- The body is built up,
- We grow into the fullness of Christ,
- We stop being “tossed back and forth” by every trend or teaching,
- We speak truth in love,
- …And we become a healthy, connected body with Jesus as the Head.
One powerful example is a church member named Marlene Wilson, whose simple “yes” to God led to discipling and training thousands of leaders overseas. No formal seminary background, just obedience, humility, and a willingness to use her gifts for the kingdom.
And the outcome wasn’t only impact “out there.” It produced spiritual depth in her — the exact kind of maturity Paul describes.
Your Next Step
If you’ve given your life to Christ, you are gifted, and you are called. If you haven’t, that’s where everything begins. Scripture promises: everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Baptism isn’t the end of a journey; it’s the beginning of a new reality.
If you’re looking for a church home in The Woodlands, we’d love to help you take a next step, whether that’s learning more about Jesus, discovering your gifts, or finding a place to serve.
Ephesians 4:7–16 reminds us that Jesus is the true victorious King, and His victory doesn’t crush people; it restores them. He gives gifts to His people, not for personal recognition, but for the common good. When every believer embraces their calling, the church grows stronger, believers mature, and our community sees what the love of Christ looks like in real life.
If you’ve been waiting for someone to “give you permission” to serve, consider this your invitation from Scripture: you are gifted and talented, and God can do more through your life than you can imagine when you submit it to Him.
